Nine teenagers have been arrested in South Carolina over the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy on June 24, 2023. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, the fight “over a girl” may have been partially captured on video by one of the suspects.

Trey Dean Wright was shot and killed by a 19-year-old suspect in Johnsonville, a small city in Florence County. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office discovered Wright’s body along First Neck Road on June 24. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The road where Wright was found is a rural area around 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. Deputies arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway the next day, saying he shot Wright after the two had argued. According to investigators, Raper later admitted to authorities that he and Wright got into an argument before he fatally shot him.

Prosecutors Charge Three Teenagers with Murder

The killing appears to have been premeditated by several other teenagers, who are also being held on charges. Investigators later added that several teens lured Wright to the scene where the fatal shooting occurred.

Officials in South Carolina confirmed that five teens were arrested “in connection” with the murder, helping lure Wright to the area where he and Raper were due to have a “sit-down” before the shooting took place. Sheriff T.J. Joye of Florence County said the teens were complicit, and a suspect shot Wright during an “altercation.”

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, multiple teenagers “armed with prior knowledge” that Raper was waiting for Wright with a gun and threatened to shoot him were involved in the “planned confrontation.” Officials in South Carolina also said the three teenagers — two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old — were present and “participated” in the events that led to Wright’s death.

The affidavit said that the female teen also “agreed to participate with Raper,” calling the 16-year-old victim “multiple times” and bringing him to Raper, “armed with the knowledge that Raper had a firearm and was going to shoot.”

It was reported that five of the arrested suspects are being charged as adults. This was because they were allegedly involved in the “planned confrontation” that led to Wright’s death. South Carolina laws also have a provision stating that the “act of one person is the act of all persons in furtherance of a common design.”

Raper’s bail was denied in Florence County, while the two other suspects are also charged with murder and remain in custody with no bond. Two of the other teens each posted $20,000 surety bonds last week and were released, one of whom is Wright’s girlfriend. She also faces aan ccessory before the fact of murder ccharge

The FCSO, local district attorneys, and prosecutors have not released further details of the case, saying that the investigation was still ongoing at the time of publication. However, for the family of Trey Dean Wright, the tragedy is too close for comfort.

Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, said that she still hasn’t come to terms with the teenager’s killing while the courts were slow-walking the case. “I feel like I’m going crazy and my life is upside down, to tell you the truth,” she told WBTW-TV. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”The affidavit said that the female teen also “agreed to participate with Raper,” calling the 16-year-old victim “multiple times” and bringing him to Raper, “armed with the knowledge that Raper had a firearm and was going to shoot.”
