Mid-Pacific Country Club Makes History with Autonomous Mower

This spring, the Mid-Pacific Country Club (MPCC) in Lanikai made headlines with its adoption of Oahu’s first fully autonomous fairway mower. The advanced machine, created by Firefly Robotics, marks a significant shift in golf course maintenance and is gaining attention for its innovative approach to solving persistent staffing issues.

Innovation Addresses Staffing Solution

Like many industries, golf course management has been affected by widespread labor shortages. Jason Amoy, the superintendent of the MPCC golf course, highlighted the difficulties in filling necessary positions, stating, “The whole world is short. Everybody’s short-handed, and so when there’s innovation like this where machines can actually help carry the load of work, it’s a win-win situation because we sometimes simply cannot fill the position.”

Amoy further explained that the introduction of the autonomous mower has not resulted in job losses. Instead, it allows for employees to be reallocated to other crucial tasks on the course. For example, staff who once handled mowing are now able to address areas such as blowing clippings, weed control, and raking sand traps.

Meet ‘Mikey’: The Fully Autonomous AMP-L100 Mower

The driverless AMP-L100 mower—affectionately nicknamed “Mikey” by club staff and members—has garnered significant attention. MPCC member Gary Kim shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I’ve seen it around, and I was bragging to my friends—I have three guests today, and I was bragging to them about how amazing that machine is.”

Mikey’s advanced capabilities stem from its integration with GPS mowing technology, which allows it to navigate fairways, mow with precision, and even pause operations when it detects objects like birds in its path.

Investment and Cost Considerations

While the technological leap has been met with excitement, the costs involved are substantial. According to Amoy, “The cost of the machine is about $185,000. And immediately, I mean, that’s sticker shock to just about anybody.” Despite the high price tag, the club sees it as justified. Comparable manual mowers can cost over $100,000, not factoring in continued labor expenses. With the autonomous mower, potential savings in labor and increased efficiency become a compelling argument for the investment.

Environmental and Sustainability Impact

The new autonomous mower is fully electric, offering environmental advantages over traditional diesel or gas-powered models. Amoy noted, “Once we start replacing more and more machines, now you’re talking about making a big environmental impact because that’s that much more diesel and gas you’re not bringing out onto the golf course, you’re not burning out here.” The shift toward sustainable mowing is seen as part of the “wave of the future” in golf course maintenance.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Autonomous Mowing

Currently, MPCC continues to operate a fleet of more than a dozen human-operated mowers for areas outside the fairways, as Mikey is specifically designed for fairway use. However, the club has plans to expand its adoption of autonomous mowing technology, with efforts already underway to acquire a second autonomous mower.

The introduction of Firefly Robotics’ autonomous mower at MPCC underscores a blend of innovation, practical staffing solutions, sustainability, and a forward-looking approach to golf course management.
