Invasion’s Season 3 trailer shows humanity’s final chance

If you are an Apple TV+ subscriber, there is a pretty good chance you have at least seen Invasion, the star-studded sci-fi drama which, unlike some of its more popular platform siblings, Silo and Foundation, has not always found its footing as a sort of prestige alien drama about the human condition. The first season was a slow-burn—no surprise for one of the streaming service’s most ambitious entries—which divided its still-growing audience, and even viewers who championed the show have been known to voice love/hate feelings.

That being said, the cinematography has been consistently top-notch, and the Invasion braintrust hasn’t been afraid to swing for the fences with themes that have been braver than usual, even if the storytelling wasn’t always entirely on point. However, Apple TV+ has recently shared a new trailer for the soon-to-be third season, and it very well may be the proof fans have been looking for.

Invasion was created by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, most known for his work on various X-Men flicks as well as for his producing/writing gig on the Oscar-nominated The Martian. The premise has always been intriguing: this is an alien invasion told from the perspective of civilians, who have been placed all over the world and follow storylines which play out in different regions. The dialogue weaves in English, Japanese, and Pashto in a way that makes the show’s global scale feel even more personal.

Season 1 was largely about the early stages of the alien invasion, but more than once, viewers were given glimpses of these evolved space creatures before getting to see their alien antagonists face-to-face. Some were irked by the show’s tendency to focus more on the interpersonal conflicts than the high-stakes action, but the decision was likely made to both set the tone of a more grounded sci-fi adventure as well as to allow characters to establish themselves.

Season 1 ended on the cusp of the alien invasion finally becoming unavoidable, and Season 2 had a different focus altogether: taking the setup of an entirely changed world, it sought to show how the main characters adapted, taking risks and making some near-impossible decisions. Humanity was forced into small, protected safe zones, and making it from day to day was often a tall order. The pacing was slow, but the narrative thrust was higher, and Season 3’s trailer indicates the next arc will feature a similar jolt.

Season 3 Brings Storylines Together for Dramatic Fight to Infiltrate Alien Mothership

Season 3 picks up two years later, and according to the official synopsis, Invasion will be uniting its once separate storylines and perspectives for the first time. The main characters will need to band together for a high-stakes mission to take on the aliens at their base: the mothership. It’s a significant turning point for the show, which has until this point been very much about the distance between the major players.

Aliens have continued to evolve, and according to the trailer, they have reached their “apex” form. Deadly tendrils are shot out across the globe, and it’s clear that humanity is in for a fight for its life. All of the survivors’ combined knowledge, skill, and determination will be needed if they have any shot at saving the human race. The relationships will be tested even further as old friends re-team and new alliances are formed.

Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Shane Zaza, and Enver Gjokaj all return as series regulars, playing Aneesha Malik, Mitsuko Yamato, Trevante Cole, Jamila Hudson, the divisive tech bro Nikhil Kapur, and Clark Evans, respectively. A notable addition to the main cast in season 3 is Erika Alexander, who has been confirmed as a series regular.

Story-wise, season 3 should have no shortage of material with which to wrap up arcs, as well as to live up to viewers’ expectations for the larger-scale action and alien confrontation that the show has been building. The world has changed, the characters have changed, and it’s time for the show to evolve too, bringing together the slow-burn emotional arcs with the scope and set pieces that viewers have been hoping for since its inception.

Invasion Season 3 will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025.
