Trump’s Stance on Diddy: Principle or Publicity?

Donald Trump has again made a few comments about Sean “Diddy” Combs and his sentencing. Trump made the comments during an interview with Finnerty on Friday, August 1, on Newsmax. During the interview, the former president was asked if he would issue a presidential pardon to the Bad Boy Records founder after he was convicted last month.

Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, was convicted of a single federal charge of transportation with the intent to commit prostitution last month. The judge cleared him of several other, more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. His trial has been a lengthy and often controversial seven-week process. The case also featured the explosive testimony of singer Cassie Ventura. The ex-girlfriend accused Combs of abuse and trafficking while they were in a relationship. Diddy has denied the claims and has repeatedly maintained his innocence.

In the latest interview, Trump, when asked if he would pardon Sean Combs for the verdict he received last month, gave a noncommittal answer, but he also suggested he would consider it. “Well, he was sort of, I guess, half-innocent, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory,” Trump said during the Finnerty interview. Trump also discussed his past relationship with Combs, suggesting that they had once been friends. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” Trump said. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Trump and Pardons

This is not the first time Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of pardoning Sean Combs. In May, Trump was asked a similar question during a press briefing in the Oval Office. The question came from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. Trump had the same answer at the time, which was that he would be “looking at the facts” when the time came to make that decision. He also made it clear that his personal feelings would not get in the way.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said when Doocy asked about it. Trump added that while he used to like Combs, he would not make any decisions based on their previous relationship. “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs was first charged with racketeering, conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, and obstruction of justice. The rapper was acquitted of the more serious charges, though he was found guilty on a single count of transportation with intent to commit prostitution. Combs still faces up to 20 years in prison and is set to be sentenced on October 3.

The trial has been lengthy and highly publicized. It has brought to light once again questions of celebrity justice, the power of the president to pardon, and whether friendships between the two affect clemency and pardons in the U.S. Trump’s willingness to publicly weigh in on the situation is adding a new wrinkle to the story. Even though Trump and Combs are no longer on friendly terms, Trump has been insinuating that he will look at the case objectively.

“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said during the recent Newsmax interview. “But I guess it wasn’t as good of a victory.”

A video clip of the full Trump comments from the Finnerty interview has since been posted on X (formerly Twitter). The clip has been received by political analysts, pundits, fans of hip-hop, and legal experts. At this point, it is unclear if Trump will issue the pardon to Sean Combs. But his public comments on the subject have not only kept the speculation on whether he would, but have added to the controversy.

It now seems that all eyes are on the sentencing in October. But between now and then, it will likely continue to be speculation about a possible pardon from Trump for Combs.
