The Microsoft subsidiary GitHub, which serves as the primary platform for collaborative software development, has released information about a significant upgrade for its well-known AI coding tool, GitHub Copilot. The company announced on Friday that it will implement a “premium requests” system, which will impose usage limits on subscribers who use advanced AI models past the base offerings for complex coding tasks. Users who frequently depend on Copilot’s advanced functions may face increased expenses due to this modification.
New Tiered System for Advanced AI Models
The announcement introduces usage restrictions for customers who select advanced AI models instead of the standard ones to complete demanding computational tasks. The “premium requests” system becomes active during instances of “agentic” coding when the AI independently takes control of code creation and when users edit multiple files simultaneously. GitHub Copilot subscribers maintain unlimited access to OpenAI’s GPT-4o but will now face monthly usage restrictions when accessing more powerful models such as Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.
Beginning May 5th, the standard Copilot Pro users who pay $20 per month will receive access to 300 premium requests every month. Organizations using Copilot Business will receive 300 premium requests per user monthly, while Copilot Enterprise subscribers benefit from 1,000 premium requests per user. GitHub will implement changes for the Business and Enterprise tiers during the period from May 12th to May 19th.
Options for High-Volume Users and a New Premium Plan
GitHub acknowledges that certain users will surpass their allocated limits and offers alternative solutions to handle their increased usage. Affected plan subscribers can buy extra premium requests, with each costing $0.04. Users who experience intermittent demand surges for advanced AI functions benefit from the adaptable pay-as-you-go model.
GitHub now offers Copilot Pro+ as a monthly subscription tier available for $39. The premium plan provides subscribers with 1,500 premium requests every month and grants them “access to the best models,” including OpenAI’s awaited GPT-4.5. Copilot Pro+ targets users who need top-tier AI models for their daily coding activities.
Reflecting the Costs of Advanced AI Computation
Copilot has revised its pricing scheme for advanced AI models after a similar move was made by the AI coding platform Devin one day earlier. The simultaneous evolution of these systems indicates an industry-wide movement in AI development tools, which stems from the significant computational power needed to run these high-level systems. The enhanced accuracy and reliability of reasoning-focused models such as Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet come at the cost of increased processing power and time requirements, which leads to higher operational expenses for providers.
GitHub introduced premium requests to synchronize its service fees with the computational costs required for operating advanced AI models. GitHub maintains access to next-generation AI through a tiered system while meeting the needs of users who require different levels of service.
Copilot’s Significant Contribution to GitHub’s Growth
GitHub Copilot has become a primary source of significant revenue for Microsoft, even after premium models started using usage-based costing. In August of the past year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that Copilot generated more than 40 percent of GitHub’s revenue increase throughout 2024. Microsoft CEO Nadella pointed out that Copilot’s present business volume now exceeds all revenue GitHub generated at the time of its acquisition by Microsoft seven years ago. The developer community quickly adopted AI-powered coding tools, which resulted in a major impact on GitHub’s financial performance. Premium requests will not hinder growth but rather serve to enhance GitHub’s evolving monetization strategy.
