2026 ‘Iolani Palace Ornament Unveiled

As the winter holiday season approaches, the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace have introduced a new limited edition ornament for 2026. This year’s design reflects a significant piece of Hawai‘i’s history and offers residents a unique way to celebrate their heritage during the festive period.

Honoring King Kalākaua’s Historic Journeys

The ornament commemorates the 145th anniversary of King Kalākaua’s world travels. Its design is based on the original commemorative medal created to mark the king’s groundbreaking journeys in 1874 and 1881. King Kalākaua embarked on a pivotal 91-day trip to the United States in 1874 with the aim to negotiate the reciprocity treaty. Later, in 1881, he became the first head of state to circumnavigate the globe—a feat highlighted by his meetings with various foreign leaders.

Original Medal: A Symbol of Achievement

During his travels, King Kalākaua commissioned a medal in Paris to honor this achievement. The medal featured a silver Maltese cross with a hand-painted porcelain globe at its center, depicting the Hawaiian Islands. Uniquely, the globe could rotate on a fixed axis. The cross bore the years 1874 and 1881 to mark the boundaries of his travels. In total, eight such commemorative medals were created, and the king presented them as gifts to his travel companions.

Faithful Reproduction for a New Generation

The 2026 ‘Iolani Palace ornament closely replicates the historic medal, capturing its significance for those who appreciate Hawai‘i history. Crafted from brass with an imitation rhodium silver finish, the ornament features a double-sided reproduction of the original globe artwork. While the medal originally included a tricolored white, red, and blue ribbon, the ornament is adorned with a deep red grosgrain ribbon. The size and overall look of the ornament remain faithful to the original piece.

Ways to Display and Purchase the Ornament

Versatile in its design, the ornament can be worn pinned as a medal or displayed as a holiday decoration. Each limited edition ornament is available for $40. Members of the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace receive early access along with a 20 percent discount. The ornament can be purchased through the ‘Iolani Palace website.

Commemorating Legacy Through Tradition

This special ornament offers an opportunity for individuals and families to celebrate the story of King Kalākaua’s world travels, his role in the 1874 reciprocity treaty, and the history of the Paris medal commission. By showcasing or wearing the ornament, residents and visitors can honor a lasting legacy connected to Kalākaua’s circumnavigation and Hawai‘i’s royal past.
