New Research Addresses Weight Regain After GLP-1 Discontinuation
A recent study published in Obesity Sciences & Practices has explored effective strategies to help people maintain their weight loss after stopping GLP-1 treatment. GLP-1 medications, approved for managing obesity and Type 2 diabetes, are often discontinued by 20% to 50% of users within one year due to high costs, insurance limitations, side effects, or personal preferences. Rapid weight regain is a common problem post-discontinuation, with most patients regaining at least half the weight lost, especially during the first three to four months.
Study Design and Participants
The study monitored 39 adults who had lost more than 10% of their body weight using GLP-1s and had discontinued the medication in the preceding 30 days. Over four months, researchers examined two alternative weight maintenance strategies—medically tailored meals (MTM) and a digital wellness application—compared with standard care as directed by participants' doctors.
Interventions: Medically Tailored Meals and Wellness Application
Participants were split into three groups. Fourteen individuals received usual care from their primary care provider and acted as the control group. Thirteen received medically tailored meals, which are dietitian-designed, nutrient-dense meals with controlled calories, saturated fats, sugar, and sodium. Twelve participants used the 'Noom' wellness application, which incorporates behavioral strategies, self-monitoring, and educational content on the psychological, social, and environmental factors influencing eating behaviors. App users were asked to engage with the platform for 15 minutes daily.
Assessing Weight Maintenance Outcomes
All participants tracked their weight using Bluetooth scales prior to the study and then every 30 days. The results revealed that both the MTM and wellness application groups experienced less total weight gain than the control group. On average, the control group regained about 10.75% of their lost weight. In contrast, the wellness application group regained only 3.6%, while the MTM group regained 3.58%. Month-to-month, the MTM group saw a 0.61% gain and the wellness application group 0.42%, compared to 2.94% per month for the control group.
Why These Strategies May Help
Researchers highlighted that sustaining weight loss requires addressing a complex set of behavioral, physiological, social, and environmental factors. The digital wellness app focuses on tools such as self-monitoring, behavior change skills, and managing eating triggers, whereas the MTM approach simplifies meal planning and ensures access to portion-controlled, healthful meals.
Implications and Future Directions
The study's findings suggest that nonpharmaceutical, structured support methods like digital wellness applications and medically tailored meals can significantly reduce weight regain for individuals discontinuing GLP-1 treatment. Researchers recommend early adoption of these strategies as the greatest risk of weight regain occurs within the first three to four months after stopping GLP-1s. They also advise that further research over a longer period will be needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of these interventions.
