The Hawaii & Pacific community is welcoming the 90th Annual Lions District Convention this week, marking the highly anticipated return of the event to the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel after nearly a decade. The lions district convention gathers between 225 and 250 Lions members from across the islands, providing a unique opportunity for collaboration, leadership development, and intensified community engagement.
Celebrating an ‘Ohana of Service Heroes’
This year’s event, themed ‘Ohana of Service Heroes,’ honors the enduring spirit of family and volunteerism that has distinguished the Lions Club Hawaii for generations. The theme underscores the commitment to community service, recognizing dedicated members and amplifying the reach of regional philanthropic projects.
Diaper Drive Pivots Toward Local Families
A major highlight at the lions district convention is the ambitious Lions Diaper Drive. Organized in cooperation with the Hilo Crescent City Lions Club, this initiative sets out to collect 5,000 diapers to benefit 100 children in need. With local partners lending support, the drive aims to make an immediate difference for families throughout the Hawaii & Pacific region, reinforcing the Lions’ role as proactive community stewards.
Disaster Relief Efforts Take Center Stage
The Lions’ legacy of disaster relief has become especially pertinent in the wake of recent storms affecting Molokai, Oahu, and other communities. Over $30,000 in emergency grants have been distributed, with volunteers assisting in sending vital supplies to affected families. These efforts demonstrate the responsiveness and organizational strength of the Lions in times of local crisis.
Leadership and Vision: Elections and Keynote Address
Leadership remains a cornerstone of the district convention. Delegates will participate in leadership elections—an important step in continuing strong, effective governance at both island and statewide levels. Brian Sheehan, past president of Lions Clubs International, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address, offering insights on empowering lions leadership and broadening the service network statewide and beyond.
Youth Empowerment: The Leo Youth Organization Steps Up
Recognizing the next generation of service leaders, the event includes a fundraiser organized by the Leo Youth Organization. By supporting and mentoring young Leos, Lions aim to cultivate a lasting tradition of volunteerism and ensure that new service heroes are prepared to carry the legacy forward.
Broadening Community Impact Across Hawaii & Pacific
The convention is more than an annual event. Activities such as the golf tournament, recognition ceremonies, and collaborative planning sessions all serve to deepen ties among members and make lasting impacts at community levels. Local chapters are encouraged to innovate new outreach programs that address evolving needs in the Hawaii & Pacific area.
Focus on Growth and Sustainability
District Governor Sean Bonito highlighted pride in the Lions’ robust volunteer efforts and the positive effects seen locally. One of this year’s objectives is to grow membership and raise the visibility of the Lions Club Hawaii, thereby sustaining the organization’s capacity for meaningful projects year-round. With a legacy of service, commitment to disaster relief, and forward-thinking leadership, the lions district convention continues to set the standard for community action throughout the region.
