Strange New Worlds Season 3 Brings Surprising Twists

The wait is over: Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is set to premiere on July 17, 2025. The series had only released a teaser trailer last April, and now fans have their first official look at the coming third installment.

Season 2 ended with the Enterprise under a full-on attack from the Gorn, as the enemies of the Federation had infiltrated a Federation colony world. As a result, crew members and other survivors were left trapped as hostages. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) was then faced with the difficult choice to either follow Starfleet orders and retreat or defy them in order to try and rescue the hostages. Choosing the latter, Season 2 wrapped with the ship fully committed to trying to save their people.

We got a preview of this space battle back in October at the New York City Comic-Con. As was characteristic of the show, the sequence was both tense and action-packed, serving up a space battle with the persistent Gorn threat. We9ll see how this conflict is resolved when Season 3 premieres next year, as the trailer also teases the crew of the Enterprise dealing with a whole new series of challenges.

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Continue The Story Aboard The Enterprise

Pike (Anson Mount) will continue to captain the Enterprise, but it would appear that the Gorn conflict will come to a close as the series will need to introduce a new villain for the crew to face. This new foe will put all of the crew to the test, stretching their loyalty, courage, and fortitude. This includes testing our lead characters beyond the Kirk-Pike dynamic that has driven the series since it began.

In an interview with Paramount+, the network made it clear that Season 3 will expand on its storytelling by including a wider range of episode themes and styles, such as faith, duty, romance, comedy, and more. While these are not new to Trek, Strange New Worlds will continue to do things that are not traditionally Trek. This means that some episodes will be stand-alone affairs, while others will shift genres in a way that we have not seen before in the Star Trek universe.

Series Cast Will Be Returning For Season 3, With Notable New Additions

As expected, the series’ main and recurring cast will be returning to their roles for Season 3. There are some new cast additions to be excited for, including Cillian O9Sullivan as Dr. Roger Korby. Korby is an existing Star Trek character, as he was portrayed by Michael Strong in Star Trek: The Original Series. The character of Korby in the Strange New Worlds timeline is known for his specialization in medical archaeology as an archaeologist and is the long-lost fianc9 of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). O9Sullivan9s Korby will join the Enterprise after being presumed dead for many years, and his sudden return to her life will certainly make for complicated business for Chapel, who has since begun a relationship with Spock (Ethan Peck).

There will also be appearances by both Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, each known for their comedic work. This genre variety was also teased in the Season 3 trailer, as the April teaser trailer included teases at various types of episodes: from the core action-packed episodes, to more light-hearted and comedic side stories. We can see this in the official trailer now, as the crew is shown relaxing together, navigating tense and tender romantic subplots, and dealing with the fallout of an unstable science experiment.

The brief moment where we see James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) taking the captain9s seat is also certainly intriguing. Kirk9s involvement in the season9s overarching conflict is not entirely clear just from the trailer, but we do know from this moment that it will be a pivotal moment for his character. As Pike tells Kirk before he takes the seat, The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.

It Ends With A Good-Natured High-Five Take-Down Between Spock And Oswalt9s Vulcan Character

The trailer ends with a rare moment of levity between Spock (Ethan Peck) and Oswalt9s Vulcan, who first attempts to go down low and take a high five from Spock. We first see Spock succeed, but then purposefully make the too slow move on Oswalt9s Vulcan. The Vulcan is left confused: Why would you do that? Spock asks, Because you are too slow.
