Kaimuki Dry Goods Marks the End of an Era

Kaimuki Dry Goods, a well-known fabric store and long-standing part of the local community, will permanently close its 10th Avenue location on December 15, bringing a century of business to a close. After 100 years of serving generations of customers with fabrics, sewing supplies, sewing classes, and sewing machine repair, the beloved shop will shut its doors due to rising costs and the impact of tariffs.

A Beloved Fabric Store in the Community

Throughout its history, Kaimuki Dry Goods has built a reputation as a reliable source for sewing essentials, unique fabrics, and expert advice. Customers, many of whom have patronized the shop for decades, expressed sadness upon hearing the news. Georgia Ball, a longtime customer, shared, "I’m sorry to hear that. That’s really sad." Even after moving to Kapolei, Ball said she continued to return because of the store’s unique fabric selection and her connection to the sewing machines she purchased there.

Impact on Loyal Customers

The store’s closure has resonated deeply with regulars. Robi Peterman, born and raised in Kaimuki, reflected on what the loss means for the neighborhood: “Over here it’s kind of like mom and pops, right? You just walk inside, and then you can ask whatever, like, ‘Where dis kine material? You guys get dis?’ That’s going to be sad.” For many, like customer Faye, Kaimuki Dry Goods was always the go-to for sewing supplies, treasured for its reliable selection and the sense of continuity it provided. Faye noted, "It’s always been here. It’s always been here for us."

Longtime Employees Face Difficult Goodbye

The emotional impact of the store closure is felt by the staff as well. Lois Lau, who has worked at Kaimuki Dry Goods for 13 years, admitted, “I kind of didn’t want to confront it.” For the team, the decision to close marks the end of a significant chapter in their lives and the broader business legacy of the store.

Reasons Behind the Store Closure

Jessie Miller, who took over the business with her husband Bill in 2022, described the choice to close as a very difficult and emotional decision. Since Bill’s passing in 2024, the store has held even more personal significance for her. Miller cited escalating tariffs and business costs as the main forces making it unsustainable to keep Kaimuki Dry Goods open. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to every loyal customer and dedicated employee who contributed to the success and spirit of the shop over the years.

Looking Back and Moving Forward

Kaimuki Dry Goods will be remembered not just as a store, but as a vital part of the local community, a place where sewing enthusiasts could learn, shop, and connect. Its closure after 100 years highlights both the challenges faced by small businesses and the lasting bonds formed within local neighborhoods.
